A smile

32 white pearls shining in the spotlight

demanding to be seen

like diamonds in a glass case.

She grabs your attention,

she holds your gaze,

she pulls you in.

Bestowing a sweet curse to all those who pass by —

with one glance she softens a face;

with one smirk she makes one laugh.

She brings forth brightness and light,

blinding those in the dark.

With her magnificent glory  

she has power.

Until she doesn’t…

For to smile is a sign of innocence

and innocence is weakness

to be walked over.

Abused.

Beaten.

Her pearls are pretty

but have no value,

for her smile does not give light to her voice.

Although it speaks, its message is misconstrued.

It remains a string of pearls in a glass case

to be admired but not to be understood.

So I dare those reading this today

to look behind those gentle smiles

and instead,

Listen.

For unfading power lies within words.
