Lovely readers, you’ve chosen Legally Blonde as the winner in our rom-com ranking. We put 16 movies to the test, and some faves may not have made the cut. Our editorial team members are making their cases for which rom-com is best.
“Heath Ledger was my very first on-screen crush, so perhaps I'm a little bit biased in saying that 10 Things I Hate About You is my favorite rom-com, but even today this movie is my go-to because although it is cheesy, it balances the corny romance story with genuinely funny moments throughout.” - Anita
“My favorite romantic comedy is Father of the Bride, a 1991 classic with an all-star cast. George (Steve Martin) and Nina (Diane Keaton) are proud parents of their daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams), who shares big news upon returning from studying abroad: she’s engaged! George must grapple with the fact that his young daughter is growing up as wedding preparations begin and the new in-laws arrive in town. The drama, laughs, and charm that ensue from George’s overprotection create a warm-hearted comedy about the chaos and difficulty of enduring major life altering events. Steve Martin carries the film and delivers a wonderfully relatable and endearing performance. I think it will always be my comfort film of choice.” - Anna
“My favorite romcom would have to be 50 First Dates. At first, I didn't even want to watch it because I thought that it would be way too emotional for me. But once I watched it, I was mad at myself for not giving it a chance sooner! It's such a wholesome movie and plot-wise completely different from the other romantic comedies out there! Highly recommend watching this one!” - Atreyi
“It’s not my favorite rom com of all time but I did love it — Crazy Rich Asians was such an exciting moment in Hollywood history for me. I grew up seeing very few (if any) Asian romantic leads in movies and TV shows that weren’t super whitewashed or didn’t portray any stereotypes. Not only was this a cute romantic and visually stunning movie, but it also boasted an entirely Asian cast with very different characters and personalities and dare I say it *hot* Asian men, a rarity in Hollywood.” - Caroline
“I can honestly say I’ve probably watched Legally Blonde over 10 times. Not only is Reese Witherspoon’s performance a cultural touchstone at this point, but it has all the makings of rom-com perfection: an unexpected love interest, a wicked-smart-and-she-knows-it female protagonist, and all the aesthetic staples of the early-2000s. But most importantly, Legally Blonde subverts all your expectations. It would have been easy for this film to fall victim to sorority girl stereotypes, even unintentionally, but its conscious choice to do exactly what you think it won’t is what made it instantly and forever iconic. And on top of all that, who doesn’t love a legal drama?” - Paige
With that, have a happy, safe, love-filled Valentine’s Day!
Love,
The Coven Editorial Team
